Summary

Georges Marçais wrote Les poteries et faïences de Bougie (Constantine 1916), part III of his series Contribution à l'étude de la céramique musulmane. 1 In it he refers to his earlier study of the pottery and faience of the Qal'a of the Banu Hammad and to his book Les Arabes en Berbérie. 2 3 4

Method

  • He contrasts Bougie with the Qal'a of the Banu Hammad: the Qal'a's pottery is securely dated because the town was born, grew and lost its importance in less than a century and never rose again, whereas Bougie was a port held by many masters and always in contact with the Mediterranean, so its fragments come from varied origins. 5 3
  • He therefore does not apply his Qal'a method but studies each group separately by form, technique and decoration, compares it with foreign ceramics, and presents his hypotheses as hypotheses. 3
  • He calls for methodical excavations in the town. 5
