    Summary

Fahd Abdulrahman Nasser Al-Shumaimri is a Saudi businessman and writer, born in Makkah in 1390 AH, corresponding to 1970. He is the founder of the Islamic-oriented Al-Majd satellite network and was its president for ten years. 1

    Career

Al-Shumaimri graduated from King Saud University in Riyadh with a bachelor's degree in computer science in 1992, and worked for one year teaching computer science to secondary-school students in Riyadh. 1

He co-founded the Al-Majd Trading Group, whose investments include the Al-Majd Markets in Riyadh (1997), and served as a board member and partner in several companies in the telecommunications, media and real-estate sectors. 1

He was secretary-general of the International Islamic Media Commission of the Muslim World League from 2003 to 2005. 1

    Works

Before entering the media industry Al-Shumaimri produced many television programmes as producer and director; he then founded the Al-Majd satellite channels bouquet and was its chairman of the board and chief executive for ten years. 1 The network began broadcasting on 1 Ramadan 1423 AH, corresponding to 6 November 2002, and its official headquarters is Riyadh. 2

During his tenure he founded the Al-Majd general channel, Radio Dal for children, the Al-Majd children's channel, the Al-Majd Qur'an channel, the Al-Majd Scientific Channel, the Al-Majd documentary channel, the news-service channel, the Al-Majd Hadith channel, the Al-Majd nature channel, Basma, Fikr wa-Al'ab and Rawda. 1

The Al-Majd Scientific Channel, founded on 1 Safar 1426 AH, corresponding to 11 March 2005, teaches the Islamic sciences electronically and live on air through the Open Islamic Academy programme, which follows a classroom-and-levels method and broadcasts two lectures a day; subscriptions to the Academy passed 17,000 in its first month. 3

Al-Shumaimri sold his entire stake in the Al-Majd channels project in 2009, the year the channels' subscribers reached a quarter of a million. 1 The network today publishes its channels' material on its YouTube channel, whose description lists among its channels the Scientific, Qur'an, Hadith, documentary and nature channels. 4

    Positions and criticism

This section sets out what the sources report; it is not a verdict by the museum.

The network presents itself as 'the family-safe channels' operating under Islamic controls — a description of the media project Al-Shumaimri founded, not an attestation of his personal school; no source consulted names a school of law or creed for him, and so no school is recorded for him in the museum's data. 2 4
