Overview

Abu Salih al-Samman — the exemplar, hafiz and authority Dhikwan ibn 'Abdallah, client of the Mother of the Faithful Juwayriya al-Ghatfaniyya; one of the great scholars of Medina, he traded oil and ghee to Kufa. Born under 'Umar's caliphate, he witnessed the Day of the House and the siege of 'Uthman. 1

Transmission and standing

He heard Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, 'A'isha, Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him) — whom he long accompanied — Ibn 'Abbas, Abu Sa'id, 'Abdallah ibn 'Umar, Mu'awiya and others; his son Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, al-A'mash (who heard a thousand hadiths from him), al-Zuhri, Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Ansari and many more narrated from him. Imam Ahmad called him "thiqa thiqa, among the most illustrious and trustworthy of men"; when 'Uthman was mentioned he wept until his long beard shook; Abu Hatim: "trustworthy, sound of hadith, probative." He died in 101 AH. 1
