Overview

A Circassian Mamluk sultan. He threw down al-Salih Muhammad ibn Tatar and deposed him, and the caliph al-Mu'tadid invested him with the sultanate in Rabi al-Akhir 825 AH. 2

He continued until he died in Dhu al-Hijja 841 AH, when his son Yusuf was invested and titled al-Aziz, and Jaqmaq was made his regent. 2

In "Shadharat al-Dhahab"

It says that he was Barsbay al-Daqmaqi al-Zahiri al-Circassian, who was taken from the lands of the Circassians and sold in the Crimea, then passed to Barquq, who freed him. In his days conquests were made, among them Cyprus, whose king Janus was captured and then released after the jizya was imposed on him. 3
