Life in time
Overview
Artughrul ibn Suleyman Shah the Turkman, father of Osman, founder of the Ottoman state. 2
From Kurdistan to Anatolia
His grandfather Suleyman migrated with his Turkman tribe in 617 AH (1220 CE) from Kurdistan to Anatolia, fleeing the Mongol invasion, and settled at Mayana of Akhlat. He died in 628 AH, and his middle son Artughrul succeeded him. 2
Artughrul continued to move north-west, with about a hundred families and more than four hundred horsemen. 2
Relief and the fief
On his way he heard the noise of a battle between Muslims and Christians, in which the Byzantine army had the upper hand. He went forward to support the Muslims, and his advance was the reason for their victory. The commander of the Seljuk army valued that and granted him land on the western frontier of Anatolia next to the Byzantine frontier posts. 2
A close relationship between this Ottoman nucleus and the Seljuks of Rum continued throughout his life. He died around 699 AH (1299 CE), and his son Osman succeeded him. 2
What the Turkish sources relate
The Turkish sources, as Al-Salabi relates, say that he assigned to Osman the judgeship of Karajahisar after it was taken from the Byzantines in 684 AH (1285 CE). 2
Notes
- The date of death is recorded as a report and is approximate. The conversion between the two calendars is derived.
- Al-Salabi is the only source here; it needs an additional source.
