Overview

Amr ibn al-Mundhir al-Lakhmi, a prince, the son of al-Mundhir ibn Imri al-Qays. 2

It is said that he was called "al-Muharriq" (the burner) because he burned ninety-nine men of the Banu Darim on the second day of Awara, and completed the hundred with a deputation of the Baraji, so his saying "the wretched one is the deputation of the Baraji" became a proverb. 3

The First Day of Awara

The first day of Awara — the Lakhmid al-Mundhir ibn Imru' al-Qays against Bakr ibn Wa'il, who had sheltered the Taghlibi exile Salama ibn al-Harith; refusing allegiance, Bakr were bound by al-Mundhir's oath to be slaughtered on the hill of Awara until the blood reached its foot; when the blood froze they poured water on it so it flowed, and the women were burned, until a man of Qays ibn Tha'laba interceded and the captives were freed — the boast al-A'sha made of it in verse.
