Katib of the Umayyad Mosque's building-works, then overseer of the mint — a deposit-box left by a pilgrim proved to hold dies for false coin; his house was raided, his excuse refused, and he was driven from Damascus in disgrace, sending back the verse: 'my land, though it wrong me, is dear — I am but musk that is lost outside your soil' 1.

    Summary

Al-Sinaki, clerk of works of the Damascus Umayyad Mosque, an accomplished, extremely humble littérateur with poetry; appointed supervisor at the mint, he was asked to hold a sealed chest in trust until the depositor returned from the Hijaz — knowing nothing of its contents. Then word was written to the amir Taybars the vizier's deputy that the chest held dies for striking false coin; his house was raided, the chest found, and his defence was not accepted. He was disgraced through Damascus and expelled. 1

    Exile

From the road he sent a companion: 'My land, though it wronged me, is dear; I am but musk — away from your soil, I fade.' 1
