Summary

Al-Muttalib, son of Abd Manaf and brother of Hashim. After Hashim, the siqaya (provision of water to pilgrims) and the rifada (provision of food) passed to him. He was a noble, respected man of merit among his people, and Quraysh called him al-Fayyad ("the overflowing") for his generosity. He is the one who brought his nephew Shayba from Yathrib, and so the boy was called Abd al-Muttalib. 1 2 3

Bringing back Abd al-Muttalib

When Shayba had become a boy or was older, al-Muttalib heard of him and set out to find him. When he saw him, his eyes filled with tears; he embraced him and seated him behind him on his mount. But the boy refused until his mother gave permission. Al-Muttalib asked her to send him along, and she refused. He said: "He is only going to his father's domain and to the sanctuary of God," and she then gave her permission. 2 3 He brought him to Mecca riding behind him on his camel. People said: "This is Abd al-Muttalib." He replied: "Woe to you, he is only the son of my brother Hashim." The boy stayed with him until he grew up. 2

His death

Al-Muttalib died at Radman, in the land of Yemen. After him, Abd al-Muttalib took over and maintained for his people what his forefathers had maintained for theirs. 2 3 When al-Muttalib died, Nawfal seized the arkah (rights) of Abd al-Muttalib and usurped them from him. 2 See the recovery by Abd al-Muttalib of his rights.

In Quraysh's offices
