Overview
Al-Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd al-Thaqafi. Al-Baladhuri, or another, attributes to him a saying to the effect that the love of the people of Kufa is an honour and their hatred a ruin. 1
In Kufa
Al-Mas'udi relates that he told Ibn al-Zubayr that he knew men through whom a gentle and learned man could raise an army from them, and they were the Shi'a of the Banu Hashim in Kufa, so he sent him to them. He openly wept over the Talibids and urged vengeance until the Shi'a inclined to him. Then he drove Ibn Mutay' out of the governor's palace and seized Kufa, and built a house and a garden. 2
His end
Al-Mas'udi says that Ubayd Allah ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him) was killed with him. He relates that when his wives were called to disown him, they said: "How can we disown a man who says 'my Lord is God', who fasted by day and stood in prayer by night, and gave his blood in seeking the killers of the daughter's son of the Messenger of God ﷺ?" 3
