Overview

Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah Ma'add ibn al-Mansur ibn al-Qa'im, the fourth of the rulers of the Ubaydid state. Al-Suyuti says that he sent his client, the commander Jawhar, with a great army, and he took Egypt and laid out Cairo, built the palace of government known as al-Qasrayn, and cut off the khutba of the Abbasids. Al-Mu'izz entered Egypt in Ramadan 362 AH with the coffins of his forefathers. 2

In al-Maqrizi

When al-Mu'izz entered Egypt and lodged in his palace in Cairo, he ordered in Ramadan 362 AH that "the best of people after the Messenger of God ﷺ is the Commander of the Faithful Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him)" be written in all the places of the city of Misr. 3

Al-Maqrizi also says that when al-Mu'izz arrived, the city, which had been called al-Mansuriyya, was named al-Qahira. 4

The khutba and death

The khutba and the call were established for him in the two holy cities in Dhu al-Hijja 363 AH. He died in 365 AH, and his son Nizar, titled al-Aziz, succeeded him. 5

Ibn al-Athir says that he died in Egypt on the seventeenth of Rabi al-Akhir 365 AH, at the age of forty-five, and that he was the first of the Ubaydid caliphs to rule Egypt. He relates that he took an interest in the stars and acted on the sayings of the astrologers, and that he made an underground chamber to shelter in at the time of death. He says that his son al-Aziz concealed his death until the Eid of Victory, then led the people in prayer and invoked blessings on himself. 6
