Overview
Al-Dahhak ibn Qays al-Shaybani, the Kharijite amir in the last trial of the Umayyad dynasty. He rose in al-Jazira until he prevailed there and took Mosul. 2
Entering Iraq
He set out in Dhu al-Qa'da 127 AH and entered Iraq. Abd Allah ibn Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, the governor of Marwan, made peace with him, on condition that Kufa and its Sawad and what he had taken should be his, and that Ibn Umar should have Wasit, Maysan, Tustar, al-Ahwaz and Fars. 2
He appointed Mulhan al-Shaybani over Kufa, then al-Muthanna ibn Imran al-A'idhi. He gathered forces such as no Kharijites had gathered before him, until it was said they reached a hundred and twenty thousand. 2
