    Summary

Ahmed Kalaja (born 16 April 1977 in Tirana) is an Albanian imam and public figure, imam-khatib of the Dine Hoxha Mosque in Tirana and one of his country's most followed preachers on the platforms: his Facebook page counted 326,000 followers and his Instagram 248,000 in October 2024, per the peer-reviewed Context study. 1

    Early life and education

Kalaja was born in Tirana, and his path to religion began in high school; he studied Islam for over ten years in a Tirana madrassa, then in Damascus from 1993 to 1997, and completed his higher education at the Islamic University of Medina in Islamic law. 2 After returning in August 2001 he devoted some twenty years to preaching across Albania and in the diaspora — courses, camps and translation among the work. 2 He later undertook postgraduate study in the Department of Cultural Anthropology at the University of East Anglia, defending in 2017 a dissertation on "The role of Muslim clergy in interreligious harmony and tolerance in Albania, 1912–1945". 2

    Beginnings and career

Kalaja is imam and lecturer-khatib of the Dine Hoxha Mosque, one of Tirana's largest mosques, a member of the Tirana Council of Muftis for over fifteen years, and formerly a member of the Theological Council (the highest religious decision body) of the Muslim Community of Albania; he appears from time to time on television channels. 2 The Russian Wikipedia article introduces him as an imam and blogger with hundreds of thousands of followers on Facebook, TikTok and YouTube. 2

    Positions and initiatives

In Kosovo's public sphere Kalaja became known for a petition he initiated calling on the member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to recognise Kosovo's independence; 52,000 citizens signed it within two weeks. 2 In April 2021 the Dine Hoxha Mosque was attacked and five worshippers were wounded with a knife; Kalaja expressed the hope that the attack on the congregation had not been a terrorist act. 2 These events are recorded as the sources state them; they are not the museum's verdict.

    Impact and audience

The Context study, reading the platform pages in October 2024, recorded 326,000 followers on Facebook, 248,000 on Instagram and 105,000 subscribers on YouTube. 1 The figures are dated platform counts, not facts the museum measures itself.

Al-Sam'ani travelled before and after thirty to Khurasan, Isfahan, Iraq, the Hijaz, al-Sham, Tabaristan and Transoxiana. On this first great journey (529-538/1135-1143) he went via Isfahan and Hamadan to Baghdad and its environs, to Mecca and Medina, to Damascus and Jerusalem — which at his visit in 536/1141 had been in Crusader hands for forty-two years — and north and east to Khwarazm, Samarqand, Bukhara, Balkh and Herat.
