Abu Shajara Amr ibn Abd al-Uzza al-Sulami

أبو شجرة عمرو بن عبد العزة السلمي

A Sulami, son of al-Khansa'; he led a gathering of Banu Sulaym at Jaw Quraqir (some say al-Nuqra) and fought Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) in the Ridda until God scattered their gathering after one Muslim fell a martyr; he later embraced Islam and came to Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) as he was giving to the poor, begging of him — Umar said 'are you not the one who said: I have healed my spirit from Khalid's squadron, yet I hope to live long after it?' and struck him with the durra, to which he answered 'Islam has erased that, commander of the faithful'.

Overview

Abu Shajara Amr ibn Abd al-Uzza al-Sulami, a poet and horseman of the Banu Sulaym, and the son of al-Khansa. 1

In the Ridda wars

Al-Baladhuri says he commanded a force of the Banu Sulaym at Jaw Qaraqir, or it is said at al-Nuqra, and fought Khalid ibn al-Walid in the Ridda. One Muslim was killed, and then their force scattered. 1

After his conversion

He then embraced Islam and came to Umar ibn al-Khattab while he was giving to the poor, and asked him for a gift. Umar said to him: "Did you not say: 'I was struck by the wind from Khalid's host, and I hope to live after it'?" and struck him with the whip. He answered: "Islam has erased that, Commander of the Faithful." 1

Amr ibn Ma'dikarib's apostasy after the Prophet's death

Amr ibn Ma'dikarib stayed among Banu Zubayd under Farwa ibn Musayk; when the Prophet died he apostatised and said two verses disparaging Farwa's rule, calling him Abu Umayr. He was later captured in the ridda and returned to Islam, as Ibn Hajar reports from Sayf.
