In the field

He raided the Daylam in the caliphate of al-Ma'mun. He was governor in the caliphate of al-Mu'tasim in the days of al-Afshin's governorship of the mountains, and he took the fortresses of the Daylam: Iqlasim, Buwamj, al-Iblam and Andaq. His career is connected with the campaign of Abu Dulaf against the Daylam and with the city of Karaj. 1

Before al-Ma'mun

Al-Mas'udi relates that he entered upon al-Ma'mun, who tested him with his verses describing war. Al-Ma'mun asked him about his love poetry, and he answered with words that al-Mas'udi records. 2

His death and description

He died in 226 AH, according to al-Mas'udi. Al-Mas'udi says that he was the chief of his people and the head of his tribe of Ijl and Rabi'a, a skilled and brave poet, and he relates a report of a spear thrust that went from front to back. 3

al-Afshin

An Abbasid commander who fought Babak al-Khurrami; his name occurs in the engagement of his men with Adhin, Babak's commander, in 222 AH. In al-Mas'udi's account he met the Byzantine ruler in 223 AH and defeated him in battle, killing most of his patricians, but held back from taking him, saying 'he is a king, and kings must spare one another'; al-Mu'tasim crowned him with a gold crown set with jewels, a diadem and two sashes. Then al-Mazyar, at Samarra, confessed against him that he had sent him to rebellion; he was arrested a day before his arrival, died in prison, was crucified at the Bab al-Amma and burned together with idols that had been brought to him.
