He gathered Imam Ahmad's transmitted answers and wrote them down with their chains of transmission in the book al-Jami', which counts as the foundation of the school, and so prepared the way for the writing down of Hanbali jurisprudence.

Summary

Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Harun, Abu Bakr al-Khallal, who collected the dicta related from Imam Ahmad with their chains and travelled the lands to meet the Imam's companions 1. He authored the book al-Jami'; Ibn al-Jawzi reckoned it at about two hundred parts, Ibn Qayyim at about twenty volumes or more 1. The book became a root of Ahmad's school — the companions looked into it and composed the books of fiqh from it 1. He died in 311 AH 1.
