Abu al-Su'ud al-Harimi

أبو السعود الحرّمي

c. 1186 CE · 582 AH

Abu al-Su'ud Ahmad b. al-Mubarak the ascetic of the Haram; a druggist till God set him aright — he cut himself off to God and kept the company of Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, and marvels are told of him. He would not eat till fed, drink till given drink, wear a garment till it was put round his neck, nor speak but in answer, keeping always to purity and facing the qibla. A roof fell on him and a beam broke the heads of his ribs, yet he did not stir till his companions lifted it off; he lived twenty more years with no one knowing his ribs were broken — they found them so on the washing slab. He died in 582 1.

Overview

Abu'l-Su'ud Ahmad b. al-Mubarak the ascetic al-Harimi; a perfumer whom God settled, who then cut off to God and kept company with Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani — he has karamat: he would not eat until fed, drink until watered, wear a garment until it was placed on his neck, speak save in answer, and remained ever in purity facing the qibla. 1

The wonder of his patience

A roof fell on him, a beam broke the heads of his ribs, and he did not move until companions came and lifted the roof off; he lived twenty years with none knowing his ribs were broken, until he died and they found them broken on the washing-slab. He died in 582. 1
