Overview

Abu al-Anbas al-Saymari was the court jester of the caliph al-Mutawakkil. Al-Mas'udi relates that he answered a poem of al-Buhturi with a satirical poem of mockery, and al-Mutawakkil laughed greatly and gave each of them, and Abu al-Abbas al-Mubarrad, ten thousand dirhams. He also related the story of his donkey, which died, and al-Mutawakkil ordered the singers to sing that day with verses about the donkey. 2
