Overview

Al-Buhturi, Abu Ubada al-Walid ibn Ubayd, a poet of the early Abbasid age. 2

With al-Mutawakkil

Al-Suyuti says he praised the caliph al-Mutawakkil in an ode on lifting the trial (mihna), and in it he satirised Ibn Abi Du'ad. He says he composed an ode in loyalty about al-Mutawakkil and al-Fath ibn Khaqan, and then both were killed together. 2 3

His poetry

Al-Mas'udi relates from al-Mubarrad that his poetry was better balanced than that of Abu Tammam, because he could recite an entire ode free from any critic's attack. Al-Mas'udi also relates that al-Mutawakkil recited his ode "From which border do you smile?", and al-Mas'udi says that Abu al-Anbas al-Saymari replied to it with a satire. The caliph laughed and gave each of them ten thousand dirhams. 4 5
