Overview

Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Umawi al-Marwani, ruler of al-Andalus, who took the title Commander of the Faithful, al-Nasir li-Din Allah. Al-Suyuti says that he seized most of al-Andalus, uprooted the usurpers, and conquered seventy fortresses. 1

Amirate and caliphate

Al-Maqqari says that he came to power young with his uncles present, found al-Andalus in turmoil, and it was set right for him after some twenty years. His days lasted about fifty years. He was the first of the Umayyads in al-Andalus to be called Commander of the Faithful, after word reached him of the killing of al-Muqtadir in 317 AH. He was defeated in the Year of the Ditch in 323 AH, so he stopped going on campaign himself and sent the summer raids each year. 2

Al-Mas'udi says that he raided Samora, and the battle of Shawwal 327 AH took place, in which about fifty thousand Muslims were killed, and he killed his vizier Ahmad ibn Ishaq. 3
