Madinat al-Zahra'

In 336 al-Nasir Abd al-Rahman staged a reception at Madinat al-Zahra for the envoys of Constantine VII — a sky-blue charter in gold Greek script sealed with four-mithqal gold — where Mundhir ibn Sa'id's impromptu sermon won him the qadiship; then followed embassies from Otto king of the Saqaliba, the German king, and the Frankish kings Hugh and Childebert, to whom al-Nasir sent back Rabi' the bishop 1.

Overview

In 336 AH envoys of the ruler of Constantinople came to al-Nasir, Abd al-Rahman, bearing his gift, and al-Nasir celebrated their arrival at al-Zahra. al-Maqqari describes the decoration of the palace and the troops riding out in arms. 2

The letter

They delivered their king's letter, which was on dyed parchment written in gold in Greek script. al-Nasir ordered the preachers to give the sermon, and they were dumbfounded. Then Mundhir ibn Sa'id al-Balluti stood and preached, and recited a poem he improvised. al-Nasir afterwards gave him the judgeship. 3

Later embassies

Then came envoys from the king of the Slavs, from the king of the Germans and from the kings of the Franks, and al-Nasir sent a bishop with the envoy of the Slavs to their king. 4

Abd al-Rahman al-Nasir Takes the Title Commander of the Faithful

When the umma's affairs weakened, the Abbasid pillars tottered and the Qarmatians and innovators overran the provinces, the Andalusian amir Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad the Umayyad grew resolute: 'I am the worthiest of the caliphate' — he styled himself amir al-mu'minin al-Nasir li-Din Allah, mastered most of al-Andalus, rooted out the usurpers and took seventy fortresses. Now there were three men in the world called amir al-mu'minin: the Abbasid in Baghdad, this one in al-Andalus, and the Mahdi at Qayrawan.
