Overview
Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam al-Muradi, of the Kharijites. With al-Barak ibn Abd Allah he plotted the killing of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Mu'awiya. 1 2
The agreement
According to al-Suyuti, the three swore in Mecca to kill the commanders on the night of the seventeenth of Ramadan. Ibn Muljam went to Kufa and struck Ali on the forehead with the sword as he came out calling to the prayer, and he died on Sunday night. 3
Al-Suyuti says that he fell in love with a Kharijite woman called Qatam, and gave her three thousand dirhams and a slave and a singing-girl as dowry. 3
According to al-Mas'udi
Al-Mas'udi says that he was of the Tujib and counted among the Murad, that he chose Ali in the agreement on the three commanders, and that he proposed to Qatam, his cousin's daughter. 4
