The Marinid Ghazi Volunteers of al-Andalus

الغزاة المجاهدون من قرابة بني مرين بالأندلس

The 'refractory' Marinid princes of the Abd al-Haqq line who crossed to al-Andalus as jihad volunteers from 661 AH — their deeds proved fine and their stations honoured under the Banu al-Ahmar until they shared the Nasrid realm and monopolised the leadership of its jihad, Ibn al-Ahmar appointing their chiefs over the Zenata ghazi-volunteers, the command passing between the Banu Rahhu and Banu Abi al-Ala' houses into Ibn Khaldun's own day.

Overview

They are the Ai'as, descendants of Abd al-Haqq ibn Abd al-Haqq of the Marinids, who crossed to al-Andalus as volunteers for the holy war from the year 661, according to Ibn Khaldun. 1

Their standing

Their deeds were admired and their standing was honoured by the Banu al-Ahmar, to the point that they shared power with them and held the leadership of their jihad on their own. 1

Command

Ibn al-Ahmar placed the Zanata warriors for holy war under their command, and the emirate passed between Banu Rahu and Banu Abi al-Ala until the time of Ibn Khaldun. 2

Musa ibn Rahhu al-Marini

Musa ibn Rahhu ibn Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Haqq al-Marini; he joined the Ghumara hills in the princes' revolt against Sultan Abu Yusuf, then crossed to al-Andalus in 670 AH where Ibn al-Ahmar appointed him over all the ghazi-mujahidin there as their elder and spokesman — thus founding the Banu Rahhu leadership over the Andalus ghazis, inherited by his brother Abd al-Haqq then his son Hammu.
