Twelve men of Medina's people, named by Ibn Ishaq as the builders of the mosque the Prophet ﷺ ordered razed — 'the mosque whose people wronged' on the Prophet's tongue.

Twelve men Ibn Ishaq names as the builders of the mosque the Prophet ﷺ ordered razed, of Medina's people and quarters: Khudham ibn Khalid, Tha'laba ibn Hatib, Mu'attib ibn Qushayr, Abu Habiba ibn al-Az'ar, Abbad ibn Hunayf, Jariya ibn Amir and his sons Mujammi' and Zayd, Nabtal ibn al-Harith, Bahzaj, Bijad ibn Uthman and Wadi'a ibn Thabit. Ibn Ishaq describes the mosque as 'the mosque whose people wronged' on the Prophet's tongue and records that a verse came down about them; the judgement on their intentions is quoted from the account, not the museum's word.

Source notes and markers of doubt

  • Ibn Ishaq's phrase "its builders" enumerates twelve men (p. 174); the name count matches if Jariya and his two sons are counted as three.
  • Wadi'a ibn Thabit: "of Banu Umayya [ibn Zayd]" — the bracketed addition is from manuscript (a) per the editors.

The builders of the mosque ask the Prophet to pray in it

Shortly before marching to Tabuk, the people of the mosque they had built came to the Prophet saying they had built it for the sick and needy and for rainy and wintry nights, and asked him to pray in it for them; he put them off until his return.
