محاورة الرشيد مع الزنديق في الحديث

c. 786 CE · c. 170 AH

Al-Rashid seized a zindiq and ordered his neck struck; 'Why kill me?' he asked — 'to give people rest from you.' 'And what of the thousand hadith I have foisted on the Prophet ﷺ, not one letter of which he spoke?' 'And what of you, enemy of God, against Abu Ishaq al-Fazari and Abdallah ibn al-Mubarak, who sift them and cast them out letter by letter?' 1.

Overview

Historical books relate that Harun al-Rashid seized a heretic (zindiq) and ordered his neck struck. 2

The dialogue

The heretic asked him why he was being killed, and al-Rashid answered that he would relieve the servants of God from him. The heretic said that he had forged a thousand hadiths on the Messenger of God, not one letter of which he had uttered. Al-Rashid replied that Abu Ishaq al-Fazari and Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak sift them, bringing them out letter by letter. 2

The report is linked to the subject of the continuity of the chain and the protection of hadith from forgery. This is al-Suyuti's report, and the authenticity of its chain needs an additional source.

Bayt al-Hikma — the House of Wisdom

The House of Wisdom at Baghdad, the greatest library whose report survives from the first Abbasid age: al-Rashid laid its nucleus and al-Ma'mun enlarged and strengthened it. Al-Rashid put Yuhanna ibn Masawayh over the translation of the ancient medical books found in Byzantine lands with skilled scribes writing before him; Abu Sahl al-Fadl ibn Nawbakht rendered Persian wisdom-books into Arabic in its khizana, and Allan al-Shu'ubi copied for al-Rashid, al-Ma'mun and the Barmakids. Al-Ma'mun widened it, sending to the Byzantine emperor for the ancient sciences an embassy of al-Hajjaj ibn Matar, Ibn al-Bitriq and Salm the master of the House, and making Sahl ibn Harun keeper of its treasuries — though its precise organisation and site remain wrapped in obscurity.
