Overview

Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt strangled the Prophet with his garment while he was praying in the Hijr of the Ka'ba. Abu Bakr pushed him away and said: "Will you kill a man because he says: my Lord is God?" 1 2

The report

The book relates from Abd Allah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him) that the Quraysh gathered in the Hijr and spoke of the Prophet. When he had circled them three times and they had taunted him with words, he said: "By Him in whose hand my soul is, I have come to you with the slaughter." Their words took hold of the people; then they rushed at him, and one of them seized the collar of his cloak, while Abu Bakr wept and said: "Will you kill a man because he says: my Lord is God?" 1 In the report of al-Bukhari from Urwa ibn al-Zubayr, Uqba put his garment around the Prophet's neck and choked him violently, until Abu Bakr seized his shoulders and pushed him away. 1 2

Notes for researchers

  • The reports say that this act was the most severe that Quraysh inflicted on the Prophet, as Ibn Amr ibn al-As himself says. 1

The three years of the secret call

The first stage of the call to Islam — individual and secret for three years — in which the first band believed: Khadija, Ali, Zayd and Abu Bakr on the first day, then those whom Abu Bakr called, then a company Ibn Hisham numbers at over forty from every clan of Quraysh; during it prayer was first prescribed.
