Summary
When the Hanafi-Ash'ari/Shafi'i conflict at Nishapur broke into a violent fitna in 446/1054, al-Qushayri was imprisoned by his adversaries and rescued some weeks later when his partisans took up arms; in response he wrote his famous 'Complaint of the people of the Sunna over what befell them in the ordeal', defending al-Ash'ari against his opponents' slander — a text preserved by al-Subki 1.
