Overview
Ibn Jarir, as al-Suyuti relates, says that in 284 AH al-Mu'tadid resolved to have Mu'awiya cursed from the pulpits. His vizier Ubayd Allah warned him of unrest among the common people, but he paid no attention, and he wrote a letter mentioning many of Ali's virtues and Mu'awiya's faults. 2
The judge Yusuf told him that he feared strife when it was heard. He then said that the Alids who had risen against him in every region would be drawn to them if they heard the virtues of the People of the House. Al-Mu'tadid held back from it. 2
