Ibn Khaldun describes the journey of Mansa Musa, king of Mali, to the Hijaz in 724 AH, in a procession that astonished the people of Egypt and the Hijaz. 1

The procession

His attendants numbered more than twelve thousand, wearing brocade and Yemeni silk. He gave people choice food and sweets at every stop, and Egypt afterwards spoke of his generosity and the greatness of the king of Mali. 1

He adds that he wanted to build a house in the centre of his realm, well built and covered with lime. 1

Djinguereber mosque built at Timbuktu

On Mansa Musa's return from the hajj the Andalusian architect Abu Ishaq al-Sahili came with him and built the Djinguereber mosque at Timbuktu about 1327.
