Overview
Al-Suyuti relates that Yazid ibn al-Walid (the "deficient") rebelled against his cousin al-Walid ibn Yazid, killed him and took the caliphate, in about 126 AH. 2
The sermon
Yazid stood up to preach, and according to al-Suyuti he said that he had not gone out of wickedness, or insolence, or greed for power, but out of anger for God and His religion, calling to His Book and the Sunna of His Prophet when the markers of guidance had been effaced. This is Yazid's own justification for his rising, as al-Suyuti transmits it. 2
What is not covered here: the details of the battle and the position of other sources on the event. This needs an additional source.
