Khwarizm's King Summoning Qutayba against his Brother

استدعاء ملك خوارزم قتيبة على أخيه

Khwarizm

Khwarizm's king, weak, with his brother Khurrazad risen strong against him, sent Qutayba an offer: so much money and the keys, if Qutayba would make him king over his lands instead. Khwarizm is three cities ringed by Fariqin, Madinat al-Fil the strongest — Ali ibn Mujahid says Madinat al-Fil is Samarqand — where the king took his seat and sent on the money.

Overview

Al-Baladhuri relates that the king of Khwarazm was weak, and that his brother Khurrazad opposed him and grew strong against him. He sent to Qutayba that he would give him money and hand over the keys, on condition that he make him king of his lands rather than his brother. 1 The event took place in Khwarizm.

The cities

He says that Khwarizm has three cities surrounded by walls, the strongest of which is the City of the Elephant. Ali ibn Mujahid said that the City of the Elephant is Samarqand. The king went to the strongest of the cities and sent the money to Qutayba. 1

Qutayba's Settlement of Khwarizm

Qutayba sent his brother Abd al-Rahman ibn Muslim against Khurrazad — killed, with four thousand prisoners slain — and restored the first king on the agreed terms; his own people, calling him weak, killed him, whereupon Qutayba gave Khwarizm to his brother Ubaydallah ibn Muslim.
