Summary
In 620 AH the great battle took place between the Tatars and the Qipchaq and the Russians. The two sides held their ground for days, then the Tatars won and overcame them by the sword 1.
This Tatar force, the one that had pursued the Khwarazm-shah until he died in flight, had marched out of Khwarazm and ravaged Qazvin and then Azerbaijan. It besieged Tabriz, and its ruler, Ibn al-Bawlan, offered money and gifts, and they left him. Then they took Maragha by the sword and almost reached Arbil, but the armies of Iraq and Mosul gathered to fight them, and they turned away. They passed by Hamadan, took it by the sword and burned it. Then they took rough routes through the mountains of Derbend-Shirvan, met the Lan, the Lakz and groups of Turks, and defeated the Lan. Then they attacked the Qipchaq, killed and enslaved, reached the tents of the city of the Qipchaq, took it, and remained there until this year 2.
When the Tatars met the Qipchaq and Russian forces and the battle took place, the Muslims in the nearby lands came out to hear the news, with fear and hope at once. Then news of the Tatar victory came, and people understood that the flood would not stop at any limit, and that the people who had destroyed Khurasan would not be turned back by any host or any helpers 3.
