Overview
Ibn Rajab died in Damascus in 795, with no disagreement over the year; the sources differ on the month — Ramadan for al-Sakhawi and Ibn al-Imad, Rajab for Ibn Hajar and al-Suyuti, while Abu al-Mahasin al-Dimashqi hesitated between them. He was buried at Bab al-Saghir cemetery beside the grave of the shaykh Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Wahid al-Shirazi al-Maqdisi (d. 486). 1 2 3
The gravedigger
Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi relates: 'the man who dug Ibn Rajab's grave told me that the shaykh Zayn al-Din Ibn Rajab came to him days before his death and said, dig me a niche here, pointing to the very plot where he was buried. I dug it; when I finished he climbed down into the grave, lay in it and it pleased him — "this is good," he said, and came out. Within days, by God, he was brought to me dead in his coffin, and I laid him in that very niche.' 1
