Mu'izz al-Dawla died on the eleventh of Rabi' al-Akhir 356 AH of dysentery, according to Ibn al-Athir. 1

His illness

He had prepared armies at Wasit to fight Imran ibn Shahin, when he was struck by diarrhoea. He moved toward Baghdad and left his companions behind, and then his illness grew severe. 1

His last days

When he felt death approaching, he appointed his son Izz al-Dawla Bakhtiyar as his successor, showed repentance, gave most of his wealth in charity and freed his mamluks. He was buried at the Gate of al-Tibn in the cemeteries of Quraysh. His rule had lasted twenty-one years, eleven months and two days. 1

Ibn al-Athir relates that one of his hands had been cut off, and the cause was disputed. He relates that he introduced the matter of the informers, among them the informer of the Sunna and the informer of the Shi'a, and that people became partisan for them and bet on them. 1
