Overview
al-Baladhuri relates that Mu'awiya sent Junada ibn Abi Umayya al-Azdi to Rhodes, and he took it by force, and settled Muslims there. This was in 53 AH. 1
Settlement and demolition
al-Baladhuri describes the island as one of the most fertile islands, about sixty miles around, with olives, vines and fruit. On the authority of al-Waqidi, the Muslims stayed there for seven years in a fort they had built for themselves. When Mu'awiya died, Yazid wrote to Junada ordering him to demolish the fort and withdraw. 1
Mujahid ibn Jabr was living there, teaching the Qur'an to the people.
