Overview

The battle of al-Uqab was fought in al-Andalus in 609 AH. Muhammad al-Nasir al-Muwahhidi was the commander of the Muslims. He left Marrakesh for Seville and prepared for a campaign, but he was met by the people of the 'Udwa from among the Jalaliqa, and the Muslims were routed at the end of Safar of that year. 2

The account in the sources

Ibn Khaldun reports that al-Nasir returned to Marrakesh after the battle and died in Sha'ban 610 AH. 2

"Shadharat al-Dhahab" describes it as the great battle in al-Andalus between al-Nasir and the Franks, in which a great number were martyred. 3

al-Maqqari in "Nafh al-Tib", quoting the author of "al-Dhakhira al-Sunniyya", says that al-Nasir gathered six hundred thousand fighters. al-Maqqari holds that the cause of the disaster was poor management, because al-Nasir and his vizier made light of the men of al-Andalus who knew how to fight the Franks. 4
