the killing of the Jewish tyrant al-Fiṭyūn by Mālik ibn al-ʿAjlān

قتل الفطيون اليهودي على يد مالك بن العجلان

c. 580 CE

Medina

When the Aws and Khazraj settled Yathrib among the Jewish tribes — Qurayẓa, al-Naḍīr, Qaynuqāʿ and others who held the fortresses and the mastery — a Jewish tyrant named al-Fiṭyūn came to lord over them, a wicked profligate whose hand reached their honor: no woman among them was wed until she was brought to him first. Mālik ibn al-ʿAjlān of the Khazraj killed him, and mastery passed to the Aws and Khazraj, who stayed united until the war of Sāmir 1.

Summary

When the Aws and the Khazraj settled in Yathrib, where the Jewish tribes of Qurayza, al-Nadir, Qaynuqa' and others lived, the Jews held the upper hand and authority, and built fortresses. In time al-Fityun, a Jewish man, came to rule over them. He was a wicked, dissolute man who reached out to their honour: no woman would marry without first being brought in to him, before her husband. Malik ibn al-Ajlan of the Khazraj killed him, and the Jews' dominance ended and returned to the Aws and the Khazraj, who remained united until the war of Sumayr broke out between them. 1.

The Ansar's triumph over Medina and the killing of al-Fityawn

The end of Jewish supremacy at Yathrib: the tyrant al-Fityawn of Banu La'laba claimed every Jewish bride before her husband until Malik ibn al-Ajlan the Khazraji killed him in his chamber at his own sister's wedding; Malik fled to Abu Jubayla — a Khazraji grandee at the Ghassanid court — who swore off perfume and women until the Jews were humbled, marched to Yathrib feigning a Yemen campaign, summoned the Jewish notables and slaughtered them at his door, leaving Aws and Khazraj masters of palm and dwelling.
