Overview
Ibn al-Athir reports that in 312 AH Abu Tahir al-Qarmati released those of the pilgrims he held captive, and sent to al-Muqtadir asking for Basra and al-Ahwaz; he received no reply. 1
The battle
He marched from Hajar intending the pilgrims. Ja'far ibn Warqa al-Shaybani was in charge of the affairs of Kufa and of the road to Mecca, and he went ahead of the pilgrims with a thousand men of Banu Shayban. Abu Tahir met him and defeated him. 1
In Kufa
Abu Tahir entered Kufa and remained six days outside it. He entered the town by day and stayed in the mosque until night, then went out to spend the night in his camp. He carried off what money and clothing he could and returned to Hajar. 1
Munis al-Muzaffar marched toward Kufa and reached it after the Qarmatis had withdrawn. He left Yaqut as his deputy there and went on to Wasit, fearing for it. 1
The Gregorian conversion is derived. An additional source is needed to confirm the date.
