Division of labour

Division of labour as Tareq al-Suwaidan presents it: the principle Adam Smith drew from watching a pin factory, multiplying its output tenfold; a great theory for industry, but he warns against applying it to services, where the 'complete employee' is faster and better.

The poor and the worker

Summary

Tareq al-Suwaidan presents division of labour as the principle with which the West opened modern management science, drawn from Adam Smith's pin-factory story 1.

Its origin in his account

He recounts that Smith watched the workers of a pin factory, each performing every stage, then rearranged the work so that each worker had a single step, and output rose tenfold without changing the workers, machines or materials 2 3. He calls division of labour a great theory in the world of industry, but one that dealt mankind a severe blow when it was carried into the world of services, where an applicant is stalled between one clerk and the next 1 4.

His alternative: reengineering and the complete employee

He says humanity treated this flaw with 'administrative reengineering' (reengineering, arabised as hindara), which redistributes work by process rather than by division of labour, producing the 'complete employee' who finishes a whole transaction 5 6. He advises anyone working in services, government or companies, not to use division of labour and to rely on the complete employee instead, who is better and faster 7.

Agriculture in Islam

Al-Maraghi presents agriculture as the oldest livelihood, after Ibn Khaldun, the simplest and closest to nature (pp. 27-28). Islam encourages it as the source of people's and animals' food and forbids farming usurped land (p. 28). Reviving dead land gives title, and a tract left unworked for three years may pass to another who works it, subject to the ruler's permission in practice (p. 29). The book warns against withholding surplus water and tells the Zubayr water dispute (pp. 29-30). Sharecropping is called muzara'a (p. 30).
