Summary

Sha'rawi holds that the Prophet explained that the son of Mary would come again, and relies on a hadith reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim 1. He holds that one who accepts the miraculous birth of Jesus should not find his miraculous end unlikely 1.

The hadith as Sha'rawi gives it

Sha'rawi recalls a hadith in which the Prophet asks his community how they will be when the son of Mary descends among them and their leader is one of them. He takes this as the Prophet's explanation of what the Qur'an says about Jesus 1.

The argument from the birth

Sha'rawi addresses those who accept that Jesus was born without a father but stop at the end of his life. He says that accepting the first marvel prepares the way for accepting the second 1. He does not present this as a proof for those who reject it, but as his own account of the question.

Opinions on the question

The question: Will Jesus son of Mary descend before the Hour, and how is that understood alongside the verse saying God will take him and raise him?

The descent is established by hadith, and reason should not find it unlikely once the miraculous birth is accepted

Sha'rawi says the Prophet explained that the son of Mary will come again. He cites a hadith reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim in which the Prophet asks his community how they will be when the son of Mary descends among them and their leader is one of them. He argues with those who accept Jesus's birth without a father but find his end unlikely, saying that acceptance of the first prepares the way for the second {cite:tafsir-sharawi-khawatir-scan-vol-2 p.1505}.

The people of the qibla and not declaring takfir for sin

al-Tahawi's principle of calling the people of the qibla Muslims and believers so long as they accept what the Prophet brought, and of not declaring any of them an unbeliever for a sin unless he declares it lawful.
