The Sabbath

يوم السبت

The Sabbath in the law of the Children of Israel, and the transgression committed on it. Rashid Rida reads the command not to transgress on it as meaning that no worldly work is to be done on it. He notes that al-Baqara points to some of them having transgressed on it, that al-A'raf makes this plain through fishing, and that some of them denounced the transgressors while others kept silent. He holds that their violation of the Sabbath and their entering the gate prostrating make their opposition to the Prophet ﷺ unsurprising. This is Rida's reading of the condition of the Children of Israel and is attributed to him here.

Summary

Saturday was a day with a special law for the Children of Israel, and they were forbidden to transgress on it. Muhammad Rashid Rida holds that the prohibition on transgressing on it means that no worldly work is done on it. 1 An-Nisa 154

Transgression on Saturday

Rida notes that al-Baqara points out that some of them transgressed on Saturday, and that al-A'raf shows their transgression to have been fishing on that day. Some of them denounced the transgressors, and some kept silent. 1

Its connection with their opposition to the Prophet

Rida holds that they disagreed over Saturday and disagreed over entering the gate prostrating, so their disputing with the Prophet and their obstinacy towards him should not be surprising. 1

Author's note

This is Rida's reading of the situation of the Children of Israel regarding Saturday, and it is attributed to him. The passage in the commentary on al-A'raf on this subject has not yet been read in this batch, and the views of the exegetes on the kind of hunting in which the transgression occurred have not yet been added.
