The episode and the definition

The second 'Al-Wasatiyya' episode debated the contemporary Islamic discourse: mature or reactive? 6 It proceeded from the International Islamic Fiqh Academy's definition: 'the manner of expression conveying Islam's truths and laws' — the question concerns the conveyers, not the text 1. The audience split almost evenly: 51% reactive, 49% mature 2.

Marks of the defect — method, reality, tradition, reaction

Salah al-Din al-Jurshi compressed the content problems into four: the method problem — 'starting from the conclusion, ruling pre-decided without foundations'; the gap between discourse and reality — the anecdote of a shaykh lecturing on divorce to bachelor conscripts; traditionalism — litigating questions of the Murji'a and Kharijites the age has passed, and the anecdote of a Colorado mosque lesson on the Qadianis whom nobody there had ever met; and dependence on reaction — events drag the discourse (Denmark, then the Pope) so no cumulative knowledge forms 7 8 9 10 11 12 13.

Self-criticism or a voice of optimism

Mahmoud Rashdan defended maturity: authorities like al-Qaradawi, Muhammad al-Ghazali and Abd al-Alim outweigh satellite loudmouths; and the Islamic movements practise democracy internally more than parties bearing its name 14 15. He insisted the problem is alive and being addressed — 'the power of renewal in it exceeds the power of imitation and rigidity' — and every discourse, Western or nationalist, has its flaws 16 17. The host noted Rashdan's habitual optimism 17.

The mosque and official discourse

Al-Jurshi called the mosque discourse 'mined', needing radical revision: excessive politicisation — imams appointed by governments to glorify their policies, or movements using it to justify their choices — and a historical mismatch: mosques built for homogeneous communities now facing pluralist ones 18 19 20. Rashdan argued most inflammatory pulpits are 'imposed by the regimes' on the mosques 21 22 23. Ma'mun Jarrar noted sharia colleges now admit the weakest-scoring students and so fail to produce great jurists and callers as before 24 25 26.

External pressure or internal necessity

The audience split: 51% saw the revision as an internal necessity, 49% as a response to outside pressure 4. Sayyid al-Fayiz said external pressure 'opened horizons' in political discourse — dialogue, participation, pluralism, women's rights — while the rule remains that revision should be ours 27 28 29. Mahmoud Sayyid Daghim held the discourse's growth reflects Muslims' deepening understanding of their religion 30 31.

One discourse or two

76% endorsed two different discourses for inside and outside — a result al-Jurshi found astonishing, warning against duplicity and tutelage over Western Muslims 5 32. Khaled Hroub supported unity with two examples: pulpits cursing Jews and Christians while we preach love abroad, and the remote-village sermon now translated and broadcast 33 34 35. Al-Fayiz detailed: content differs by addressee 36 37. The host concluded: 'Islam is one with levels — as the Prophet ﷺ sent Mu'adh to begin with tawhid' 38 39.
