Summary
"Sağrıcılar Camii, the Mosque of the Leather-Workers near the Atatürk Bridge, was named after a guild that once had its shops nearby. The building is of the simplest type — a square room under a dome with stone walls — yet its historical background is fascinating: it is probably the oldest mosque in the city, founded in 1455 by Yavuz Ersinan, standard-bearer in Fatih's army during the siege and conquest of Constantinople." 1
"Yavuz Ersinan was an ancestor of Evliya Çelebi, and his family kept the mosque for at least two centuries, living in a house beside it where Evliya was born in 1611; on his twenty-first birthday he dreamt there that the Prophet ﷺ told him he would be a great traveller, inspiring his Seyahatname. Yavuz Ersinan lies in the mosque's little graveyard beside his comrade-in-arms Horoz Dede, 'Grandfather Rooster', the folk-saint who roused Fatih's soldiers each morning with his rooster call and died in the final assault; Yavuz reburied him here with Fatih himself among the mourners, and the saint's grave is still venerated." 2
