Istanbul

Rumeli Hisarı, Mehmed II's castle on the European side of the Bosphorus at its narrowest point, opposite Bayezid's fortress on the Asian shore: the emperor's money could not buy it off, and when finished the two castles stood 660 m apart, their cannon able to bar any ship's passage toward Constantinople 1. The book's 82-m height figure is reported as printed.

Overview

Rumeli Hisarı, the castle Mehmed II built on the European shore of the Bosphorus at its narrowest point, opposite Bayezid's fortress on the Asian side 1.

Site and purpose

The Byzantine emperor offered money to stop its building and Mehmed pressed on; when complete, the book says, it rose 82 m, and only 660 m separated the two castles — close enough for their cannon to bar any ship's run to Constantinople 1.
