Summary
Güzelce ('Handsome') Hasan Bey Camii is Hayrabolu's principal monument, built in 1406 for a son-in-law of Beyazit I 1.
Form
The mosque is preceded by an avlu, one of the earliest mosque courtyards in Ottoman architecture; its peripheral arcade stood on rectangular piers — three on the sides, four at the ends — but the collapsed upper structure leaves it uncertain whether it was domed or vaulted 1. The court's north entrance is covered by a domed canopy Kuran considers unique in early Ottoman architecture 1. The probably-later minaret rises at the north-west; the main prayer hall carries a high dome on pendentives over a windowless dodecagonal drum, flanked by four smaller domed chambers on Turkish triangles that served as dervish hospices 2.
For young visitors
A 1406 mosque with one of the oldest mosque courtyards anywhere — and little side rooms where travelling dervishes slept.
