Summary
Edirne's bedesten is the covered market just west of Eski Cami, built by Mehmet I immediately after the mosque was finished 1.
Form and function
It comprises 36 strongrooms under 14 domes in two rows of seven on six internal piers, with doors on all four sides and arched windows under each dome 1. The bedesten was Ottoman Edirne's commercial centre for dealers in the most valuable goods — goldsmiths, jewellers, armourers, brocade merchants and sellers of costly carpets — and formed part of Eski Cami's vakıf, its profits paying for the mosque's upkeep and staff 1.
For young visitors
A locked stone box of domes built beside the mosque — and the traders' profits inside paid for the mosque itself.
