Summary
Al-Muwaffaqiyya: the military city that Abu Ahmad al-Muwaffaq founded opposite the city of the Zanj leader, called "al-Mukhtara," in 267 AH, when he realised that the war would require endurance. 1
The scene
Al-Muwaffaq sent merchants there, and markets were established. He built the congregational mosque in it, and mints were set up, where dinars and dirhams were struck. Stipends were paid out to the people, and the place became a city with its own coinage and its own Friday sermon. From it Abu Ahmad launched his campaign in Dhu al-Hijja against the city of the Zanj, when they had seized one corner of it and burned the siege engines on its wall. 1
