Overview

The Afsarwali Masjid is a three-arched mosque on the same platform as the Afsarwala tomb, south-west of Humayun's tomb and north-west of the Arab Sarai. 2 It has no inscription; Nath dates it on style to about 1530, earlier than the adjoining tomb. 3 2

The building

The prayer hall has three bays and three broad arches on the facade, each in its own frame — a device Nath finds more effective than recessed planes — with red painting on the spandrels and two oblong openings at the ends holding stairways to the roof. 2 It is built of plastered rubble; inside are stucco decoration and incised medallions, the finest being the painted incised stucco on the soffit of the central bay. 2 A single dome on an octagonal drum, square in plan inside to strengthen the walls that take its load, roofs the central bay; there is no other dome or chhatri. 2

Its place

For Nath it follows the conventional forms of the three-arched (trimukhi) type and adds little to them, unlike the mosque of Isa Khan after it. 2 4
