Summary

"Al-Tibb al-nabawi" ("Prophetic Medicine") by Ibn al-Sunni (d. 364 AH) belongs, Heinen suggests, to perhaps the earliest representative of Prophetic Medicine, a branch of Arabic medical writing relying wholly on reports from the Prophet ﷺ. 1 Al-Suyuti drew on it in al-Hay'a al-saniyya, having himself written a long treatise on Prophetic Medicine. 1

Manuscript

Heinen consulted a copy in the Süleymaniye (Fatih collection no. 3585), 72 folios copied in 775 AH, which he believed the only one extant; Ömer Recep studied it in his Marburg thesis of 1969 together with Abu Nu'aym's Prophetic Medicine. 1

Scholars' views

Heinen notes that some modern scholars, such as Bürgel, saw Prophetic Medicine as a threat to scientific medicine among Muslims; he himself argues that its existence beside scientific medicine was no danger to it, citing Ibn al-Nafis and Qutb al-Din al-Shirazi, who also wrote on the religious sciences, and holding that variety of ideas is worth more than the uniformity of one school. 1 2
