Algebra
Algebra: the science of equations the whole world named after al-Khwarizmi's Compendious Book on the Calculation of Restoration and Balancing, from Baghdad around 820. The book taught solving problems by restoring broken parts to wholeness — al-jabr — and balancing the two sides — al-muqabala, applying it to inheritance, trade and measurement. From his work came the word 'algorithm' that computers run on, and Latin translations carried it into Europe's schools until 'algebra' became the science's own name. Thus al-Khwarizmi was not just a scholar solving problems but a teacher who taught humanity how to think about the unknown. From Baghdad his name moved into every language until 'algebra' became a lesson in every school on earth, making al-Khwarizmi the teacher of those who never heard his name — the teacher's greatest honour.
