Sulaymanid sharifate of Mecca

The Sulaymanid state of the Hasanids at Mecca and later Yemen; when Quraysh's folk died out of Mecca in the second-century fitnas the ra'asa arose for the Banu Sulayman ibn Dawud ibn Hasan al-Muthanna — their chief Muhammad ibn Sulayman 'al-Zaydi' (after his Imami creed), the amir whom Abu Tahir al-Qarmati met on the Day of Tarwiya and slaughtered the pilgrims in 317 — their emirate lasted through the Alid-Qarmatian wars until it faded.

Overview

The Sulaymanid state in Mecca, the state of the Sulaymanids of the Banu al-Hasan, in Mecca and then in Yemen. Leadership arose among the Banu Sulayman ibn Dawud ibn Hasan al-Muthanna. 1

Its beginnings

Ibn Khaldun reports that the people of Mecca from Quraysh died out after the second century AH because of the strife in the Hijaz, and so leadership passed to the Banu Sulayman. 1

Their leader Muhammad ibn Sulayman

Their senior at the end of the second century AH was Muhammad ibn Sulayman, called al-Zaydi. Ibn Khaldun says the title is from his creed among the doctrines of the Imamiyya. 1

Abu Tahir al-Qarmati met him in Mecca on the day of Tarwiya, and the pilgrims were plundered in 317 AH. 1

Continuation

Their emirate continued in Mecca amid the strife of the Alawids and the Qaramita, and then their affair died out. The data give no date for its beginning or its end, and a second source is needed. 1
